5 Best Tips for Back-to-School

by Editor

It’s that time of year again and stores are already planning for the back-to-school shopping rush. While kids are soaking up the summer fun, parents may be dreading the frenzy that’s just around the corner. However, with proper planning and a few helpful tips, parents can help their children get ready for another successful year in school.

Shop Early for Back-to-School Shoes

Avoid out-of-stock inventories and shop early for back-to-school shoes. First, determine how many pairs of shoes your child will need. Consider what classes your child will be enrolled in such as PE or dance classes as you make your shopping list. The type of shoes your child will be wearing also depends on their activity level and the school’s dress-code policies. Don’t forget that some schools prohibit open-toed shoes. As a general rule, your child will need:

  • Casual/dress shoes
  • Flip-flops/sandals/slip-on shoes
  • Sneakers

Purge Closets for Back-to-School Clothing Needs

It’s no secret that kids grow like weeds, so it’s a good idea to purge their closet and assess what clothing items they can still use. Make a list of how many jeans, pants, shirts and sweaters you need based on your current inventory. The main objective is that your child has several well-fitting, comfortable outfits for school that keep them warm or cool during the appropriate season.

As a general rule, your child will likely need the following:

  • Jeans: 2 to 4 pairs
  • Long-sleeved tops: 3 to 5
  • Pants, shorts and/or skirts: 3 to 5 pairs
  • Short-sleeved tops: 5 to 7
  • Socks and/or leggings/tights: At least 7 pairs
  • Sweaters or hoodies: 2 to 3
  • Underwear: At least 7 pairs

Make sure to check the dress code requirements at your child’s school before back-to-school shopping.

Stock Up on School Supplies

Get started stocking up on school supplies as soon as the list becomes available. Some items such as notebooks with inside pockets sell out quicker than other supplies. Early bird shopping will also take some of the financial pressure off of you, especially if the list is longer than you expected it to be.

Let your child get involved in the planning and organizing process. Have them make a wish list of school supplies that they would love to have in their backpack. No doubt shopping for back-to-school supplies and backpacks will get your child excited about the upcoming year.

2 Weeks Before School Starts

Avoid unwanted surprises by getting ready for the new school year early. Plan a back-to-school agenda that ensures you and your kids are ready for a successful new school year. Some items on your agenda could include:

  • Visit your child’s school and let your child get familiar with their new learning environment.
  • Help kids establish routines such as morning schedules that include time for breakfast.
  • Store school supplies such as backpacks in an easy-to-locate place.
  • Have your child make a lunch menu grocery list.

Be Back to School Ready

Consider the aforementioned tips and shop early to make sure you get the best back-to-school deals. With a little planning and getting organized, your family can face a new school year with excitement. And your child will be ready for the first day back with the confidence of a winner.
