8 Reasons to Be Happy (Even On Your Hardest Days)

by Sammy Nickalls

On your rough days, do you find yourself sitting on the couch, sulking and wondering why things can’t just get better?

When all of the negatives build-up, it can be hard to see past them. It’s almost like all of your worries are bricks, and they build up to be a wall that seems insurmountable.

However, there are always plenty of reasons to be happy, even on the most difficult days. Here are seven reasons to be happy when you’re finding it difficult to get past the wall.

reasons to be happy

Reasons to Be Happy

1. You are alive.

There are many reasons to be happy, but let’s start with the basics: you are alive. It’s so easy to take this for granted, but think about how many little things had to come together to make your presence here on Earth a reality.

Not only that, but your body is doing so much work that you’re not even conscious of just to keep you breathing, to keep you able to face the day and take on life. Your body is an amazing, functioning wonder—and never let yourself forget that.

2. You are loved.

There are other people in this world that love you. They might not be the best at expressing it sometimes, but they think about you every day, and they care about you, and they would do anything for you.

Make a list of these people that view you as one of the most important parts of their life. All of them are reasons to be happy. Cherish them and express your love to them as frequently as you can.

3. You are capable…

You are capable. You are talented, and you have specific talents that make you unique. Whether it’s playing beautiful music on the piano, writing a captivating story, making a mean apple pie, or shooting a perfect lay-up on the court, you are capable and you are talented.

4. …and you are capable of doing anything you want.

It might not seem like it, but you have so many opportunities to do anything your heart desires. Want to take a cooking class? You can. Want to travel around Europe? You can. Want to write a book? You can!

You have the rest of your life to chase after your goals and dreams. It might take a bit of elbow grease, but all of your goals should bring you joy because you can achieve them—right now if you like!

5. You have countless good memories ahead of you.

Isn’t it a wonderful thought that some of the best moments of your life haven’t happened yet? Your favorite memories are still ahead of you, and you will have countless moments in the next few decades that will make you smile, laugh, or even cry from happiness. You will have moments that touch you, that make you feel ecstatic to be alive.

Even if you’re sad right now, you have a bright and wonderful future ahead of you. Cherish it, and remember your sadness is only temporary.

6. Even your struggles are a beautiful thing.

Your struggles themselves can be a source of happiness. Sigmund Freud once said, “One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.”

Your struggles might have been (or are currently) painful, but you go through the most change during adversity. When times are good, you aren’t as challenged. If it weren’t for your struggles, you wouldn’t be where you are now. And that’s a beautiful thing.

7. You are an integral part of a massive universe.

Some people say that thinking about the inconceivable vastness of the universe is depressing, but I’d argue the opposite. When you’re going through something hard, walk outside and look at the stars.

Remind yourself that they are thousands of light-years away and that you are a tiny being on a huge planet in a massive galaxy in an infinite universe…and suddenly, your problems won’t seem so large. You are blessed enough to be alive in this beautiful universe.

8. You are unique.

One of the biggest reasons to be happy is because you are you. Your personality, your pet peeves, your favorite things, your fears, your thoughts, your quirks – everything about you makes you unique and makes you, you. You are who you choose to be, and there will never be another you. And that makes you pretty amazing if you ask me.

The Takeaway

When things get rough, it can be hard to see past your struggles and remind yourself that life is good. It can be easy to get caught up in the negatives and forget about the positives. However, no matter what, remember: you are alive, you are loved, you are able (and able to do anything you want), your best memories are still ahead, your struggles are beautiful, you’re a small part of the universe, and you are amazing.

There are so many reasons to be happy. Always remember them, and you will get through anything life throws at you.
