5 Cancer Causes Hiding in Your Home

by Dr. Ben Lerner
cancer cause - medication

The United States has been fighting a high-profile battle against cancer since President Richard Nixon signed the National Cancer Act in 1971. Since then, the $100 million that Nixon initially allocated to find cancer’s cure has transformed into a billion dollar industry marked by hundreds of annual fundraisers, stockpiles of pink merchandise and a nationally publicized awareness month.

Yet cancer rages on with rates of diagnosis higher than ever. This terrible disease takes almost 600,000 lives each year, 50 percent more than in 1971 when our war on cancer began. How?

Most Cancers Aren’t Hereditary

Only about 5 percent of all cancers are “strongly hereditary,” according to the American Cancer Society’s 2012 Cancer Facts and Figures pamphlet. “Most cancers do not result from inherited genes but from damage to genes occurring during one’s lifetime.” Everyday lifestyle factors are the primary causes.

Regular exercise slows the progression of prostate cancer in men over 65, and men who are the most physically active—in any way—can reduce their risk of colon cancer by as much as 40 percent. Certain foods (like carrot, flaxseed, broccoli and leafy greens like kale and romaine lettuce) have also been shown to fight the development of prostate cancer.

Nutrition & Exercise is Not Enough

Despite these findings, poor diet and exercise are not the only factors related to cancer risk.

We hear stories of high-profile athletes who have been diagnosed with cancer, so it is clear that being in premier physical shape does not prevent cancer.

Professional cyclist Lance Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had metastasized to his lungs and brain. In 2008, current New York Giants linebacker Mark Herzlich was diagnosed with the rare bone cancer Ewing’s sarcoma. Herzlich’s diagnosis came shortly after he was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year (he played for Boston College at the time).

And, in 2003, former NFL player Merril Hoge was diagnosed with stage 2 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after doctors discovered a tumor behind his stomach.

These men were all professional athletes who receive the highest quality nutritional advice and have access to the most cutting edge fitness facilities. Though these advantages likely improved their abilities to recover from the disease, they were still diagnosed in the first place.

There’s no simple answer, but we know that common environmental toxins play a large role in cancer’s development.

Believe it or not, everyday items in your home contribute to your health. Household items can affect your ability to stay healthy and fight off serious diseases like cancer. Even your toothpaste makes a difference.

Eliminate These Top 5 Cancer Causes From Your Home

Check out this list of the top five toxins to eliminate immediately so we all can become cancer-fighting machines. Of course – in addition to these tips – people everywhere need to make sure they are exercising, eating healthy and strengthening mindset on a daily basis.

1. Food Additives

Stay away from foods containing food additives, dyes, colorings, flavorings, stabilizers, fake fats, artificial sugars and preservatives. The average person ingests 140 to 150 pounds of additives a year.

2. Alcohol

Alcohol has been linked to a number of different cancers including mouth and throat, voice box, esophagus, colon and rectum, liver and breast cancer.

3. Plastics

Food wrapped in plastic, plastic take-out food containers and water sold in plastic bottles expose you to very high levels of phthalates and other chemicals. Plastics damage hormone receptors, cause fatigue, harm brain chemistry, accumulate in organs and lead to illness. They’ve been specifically linked to cancers of the prostate, lung and thyroid.

4. Water

Monitor the quality of the water you drink, bathe in and use to clean and prepare foods. Tap water is full of chlorine, heavy metals, contaminants, and other toxins. Chlorine is a big red flag. If it is strong enough to kill all bacteria and other dangerous compounds in our water, do you really think it’s a good idea to pass it through our systems?

5. Personal Care Products

These toxins are hiding in plain sight on the shelves and in the drawers of your bathroom. The list of toxic substances includes sunscreens, soaps, shampoos, detergents and—as previously mentioned—toothpastes. Sodium lauryl sulfate is a common degreaser used in practically every soap, shampoo and toothpaste on the market today. The compound has been used in studies to induce mutation in bacteria and irritate skin. It has also shown to enter the heart, liver, lungs and brain from skin contact and has been proven to maintain residual levels once inside these organs.

Switch to organic and plant-based products to avoid the long-term toxic buildup caused by these dangerous chemicals. Prolonged toxicity is known to foster the development of cancer.

I haven’t read every comment but I read a lot of them. I don’t think anyone mentioned wireless technologies; cell phones, wifi, smart meters, cordless phones. Radio frequency microwave radiation……see http://www.C4ST.org

Great article, you don’t hear this on mainstream media! This stuff to me is common sense, so I cringe when I see everyone gobbling down and bathing in toxic chemicals.

When I was growing up 50yrs ago I only knew 2 people who died from cancer, and one of those would have been treatable if she had gone to the doctors in time. Now I know, at present, 9 people dying from terminal cancer and most of them are young parents and have lost in the last 15yrs at least another 10 friends and family to cancer. They don’t eat junk food, nor are they overweight or smokers and they live in different countries all around the world. And it’s not just people. 40yrs ago I didn’t know anybodies cat/dog dying from cancer, in fact they lived to a grand old age, but now it seems that cancer is all they die from and it is only a very very few who escape. This can’t be a coincicence. There must be something, either in what we are all breathing or eating that is causing this sudden increase in cancer deaths. Look to what is being put on/in the food we eat and what is being pumped out into the air. Mend that, and maybe the cancer rates will go back down again.

Jason April 28, 2014 - 11:14 pm

We know what causes cancer the primary reason is RADIATION. Is everyone forgetting Chernobyl April 26 1986 or have we forgotten the 1000 nuclear bombs that united states alone has detonated on the planet since the 50’s also the other 1000 nuclear bombs that the rest of the countries have detonated.Lets not forget 3 mile island!!!!! Also march 2011 FUKUSHIMA………….Which is still spewing radioactive isotopes into the ocean.Do you live near power lines have wifi or a radio, cell phone television, satellites ?????? we are being bombarded with radiation and have no say. I personally want to launch a class action law suit against cable company/internet providers for my neighbors wifi giving me radiation….cancer is not a disease. It is the result of radiation poisoning……..

Lee May 21, 2014 - 1:06 pm

What causes cancer in most cases derives from your diets! Yes chemicals and toxins known as carcinogens are purposely added to our foods (Coca Cola being on of the very worst) to slowly make us ill and give us cancer and other diseases. Just google “coca cola carcinogens” and read up.
Then as cancer is really just a pharmaceutical business the cures need to remain suppressed so they can keep selling man made drugs (called medicines) which are patented and produce mega profits but DO NOT cure cancer – that’s because since 1939 cancer cures have been banned from being advertised.
Now the cannabis industry in just Britain is estimated to be worth £200 billion per year, who would want to see a cure loosing this much revenue!
Cannabis cures cancer as do many other things and for that reason they are banned or suppressed for the good of the pharmaceutical industry and the profits involved in death and illness.
Just google “cannabis cures cancer” and read up.
The truth is under your nose people, right here on the web, but will your well conditioned brains allow you to google the 2 lines I wrote above? Or will the conditioning take over and have you do 1 of the following 2 things:
1) You will ignore this post and carry on with your life.
2) You will respond to me calling me this that and the other while rubbishing what I am teaching you?

Lee May 21, 2014 - 1:09 pm

Also you may want to look up other causes of cancer such as metals in your tap water, chemtrailing (sulphur dioxide) metallic particles dumped into the atmosphere, doctors medications, lack of exercise, high acidic body environment.

Oh gosh – where to begin?? I’m not denying that there are some manufactured chemicals that are harmful, and one of the major things that ticks me off about toxicity research is its generally only short term high dose effects that are looked at, not gradual low level long term build up, but start bandying around the word ‘toxin’ and it seems to me you just about have carte blanche to come up with whatever pseudo scientific mumbo jumbo you wish and it’ll sound vaguely credible. In fact, a helluva lot of contributary factors to cancer (there is very rarely one cause of cancer, it’s a cascade effect, unless you are unlucky enough to have specific genetic mutations such as brca1) are ‘natural’ – sunlight? tobacco? the ageing process? human papiloma virus? Hepatitis B? Not to say manufactured chemicals don’t have a place in this list as well, but get a grip. Just because something is ‘natural’ does not mean it’s necessarily any better or worse for you than something that isn’t.
And don’t even get me started on the acidic/alkalis diet stuff. Do you have any idea how well controlled homeostasis is in the body? How if the pH of the blood varies slightly respiration rates are increased or decreased to change the rate of CO2 exchange? If you eat a load of acidic fruit your wee pH will drop dramatically. The pH of your body won’t though (unless you are very unlucky and suffering from serious kidney disease), due to the marvellous way the kidney functions to maintain pH and ionic balance. It’s a load of, at best, conjecture, and at worst utter rubbish that could possibly do harm by encouraging people to remove food groups from their diet that actually contain useful nutrients.

Joe Bloggs June 13, 2013 - 8:53 pm

Oh gosh, love this term ‘suedo science’ used by people who are so schooled in the sciences they believe it and spruik it like followers of Scientology. You said it yourself, there’s no one cause, but that doesn’t mean one cause can’t trigger it. Science is guessing for all it’s research thats very slow and doesn’t want to put out anything till all the trials and red tape is gone through, meanwhile people are dying anyway while they wait. For all your knowlege of scinece we get few definates. Again people die wanting on your correlations and more reserach is needed etc before your threories and links become concrete. The same amount of time and propper process though doesn’t seem afforded to global warming though? We can move on that quickly becasue no one can sue us for following inconclusive theories.

Medical science has come up with kemo that won’t work on and damages 85% of patience yet we pursue it becasue ‘science’ came up with it and pharmacutical companies bennefit from it. Science has done a lot of good but has also done a lot of bad and gave us things like the nuclear bomb. If you don’t have the answers and are still guessing don’t shoot down something else becasue your not impressed with the science behind it. I don’t care what quals you have, the arrogance of you lot never ceases to amaze. It’s like the old story of a truck stuck under a bridge and a whole bunch of smart engineers stand around unbale to figure out how to get the truck out putting up all kinds of plausible theories when a little girl come along and tells them to let down the tyres. It’s possible, it happens, doctors get it wrong regulary even with their best educated guesses, they still sew people up with surgical instruments left inside them and plenty of examples of other ‘miscalculations’ going back through history. They thought the earth was flat once too.

Everybody is different and living in different environments and are exposed to different things thats why tests and studys on groups of people don’t give conclusive results. If your going to die, why wouldn’t you give something a go that has testimonials from people you know, even if science says it can’t work. Cancer has been known to greatly reduce or cease to advance in people without doctors knowing why.
Money. legalites, politics, arrogance and apathy is the real reasons decent prevention, treatments and cures don’t come quick enough.

I hate this, being forced to read every single component of every single cosmetic, every ingredient of the food I buy… Things should be made so that always are safe, one shouldn’t need worry about these basic things! It’s especially hard when you’re already genetically predisposed to cancer, like me. God, I am not already enough worried for myself and, even more, for the children I’d like to have one day?
That’s just not right.

jamie June 3, 2013 - 9:15 am

Some true, some not true… organophthalates are contained in PVC not PET, PET is what our food and beverage containers are made from. Though, some food wraps or films do contain PVC derivatives.

Thats nonsense mate…. think you have your facts wrong there…. PVC = poly vinly choride
PET = poly ethylene terephatalate… , both are used for food stuff. PVC is the danger as it has plasticizers and other additives that can leach out at elevated temperatures.

Smalley June 9, 2013 - 12:56 pm

And what about uPVC ? u meaning unplasticized .

Tony June 14, 2013 - 7:37 pm

It’s proper name is poly ethylene terephthalate and it does not, despite its name, contain poly ethylene. It may leach phthalates though, and this substance is used in many different areas of everyday life ranging from children’s toys, coatings on tablets, building materials etc etc. Look it up on Wikipedia for a long list. USA are removing this substance as they can and we should probably follow suit as it is so widely used and is probably doing us no good at all.

Chris glennie May 26, 2013 - 8:48 am

The 50% rise in numbers killed by cancer is the alarmist hook to get you reading this article, but the population of the US was 203 million in 1970 compared with 308 million in 2010 , ie a rise of 50 %, so in fact the RATE of cancer deaths has stayed the same.

Ok according to this article tap water is no good, and bottled water is bad because it is stored in plastic bottles. Where does the author suggest most people obtain their drinking water? Not everyone has an artesion spring in the back yard or lives in the mountains next to a burbling snow-fed stream.

xyz May 10, 2013 - 6:15 pm

“Tap water is full of chlorine, heavy metals, contaminants, and other toxins”

I don’t think this is true of the UK, except for the chlorine bit, which you can obviate by pouring water into a jug and leaving it on the side or in the refridgerator to stand for a few hours or overnight which allows the chlorine to evaporate off.

Alex Rube May 15, 2013 - 7:14 pm

You can get the very best quality water from a relatively cheap water filter plumbed in to your cold water feed in your kitchen . Don’t get a reverse osmosis water (RO) filter though. RO water has no minerals and is acidic.

Djinnie April 24, 2013 - 1:23 pm

Cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment, it goes without saying our diet has got a lot to do with our body chemistry. Obviously there are many external toxins that when absorbed can cause us to develop cancer, and of course hereditary factors. I have had kidney cancer twice now, I have suffered from GERD for many years, I have a very acidic stomach. Since having cancer the second time, I have changed to a diet in the hope that it may help me avoid it the third time. I stay away from using harsh chemicals in my home, but obviously we have no idea what we are breathing in. I am fortunate that I live in France, they don’t put fluoride in the water at least.

Kay Fitzgerald May 10, 2013 - 3:19 pm

Acidic conditions in the body can be relieved. Get informed about KANGEN WATER . I had been diagnosed with endometrial cancer, had surgery, chemo, radiation and even then a few cells had migrated to a muscle (Erectus muscle) and hid thru all the chemo etc. Good thing my son, who is into Homepathic medicine, had gotten me to drink water filtered thru a special machine that splits out the acidic water components leaving the alkali elements. Cancer cannot live in an alkali environmenet and it thrives in acidic one. Find a listing of foods that are mainly acidic and/or alkali. Even healthy foods like citrus foods are acidic. They can be avoided completely for a while so your body can get into alkali mode, or they can then be slowly included into things like salads. This water was used for many years in Japan after the atomic bomb was dropped leaving radiation sickness and damage to genetic components in the body. Water is different depending on the areas in the world and the environments. Taking out acidic components helps the water still be “alive” with the necessary components to be healthy water. Become informed about this water and the machine that connects to your incoming water source in your home and used daily for more things besides just drinking water. This has helped me so much in that when I took chemo & radiation treatments, my mouth did not break out, I did not have vomiting or diarreah or other discomforts from side effects . My oncologists were surprised that I did not have nausea or any other problems. I credit it to the Kangen water and avoiding certain foods at home and in the hospital. This could possible help you if you are willing to follow the instructions on diet also. I have finished all my treatments now and am feeling better.

hugosmum70 May 11, 2013 - 6:08 am

Sad to say cancer is a good illustration of our lack of understanding of our bodies.
Perhaps in a 1000 years time we may understand all there is to know.

bernie April 12, 2013 - 5:59 pm

What a load of rubbish gets talked about on this subject. The only correct information is the analysis of the risks of Radon exposure. The rest is just conjecture with no scientific grounding.

Tony June 14, 2013 - 7:44 pm

Radon gas from the ground, which is breathed in, is only supposed to increase the risk of lung cancer is it not, also it is not in all areas of the country but cancer is, so that blows that theory clean out of the water!

Ann Holloway April 11, 2013 - 12:27 pm

Years ago when we went out for a drive down the Motorway etc we used to have to stop to wash the crushed flies and bugs off the windowscreen, today you can drive anywhere and not get one on the windowscreen so where have they all gone, what are they putting on our crops, the vegetables that we eat are absorbing these chemicals, and washing them is no good. I blame the supermarkets and I believe they use chlorine to wash the veg in such high amounts that is causing problems as well.

Roy Basan April 5, 2013 - 10:47 am

When we talk about cancer we always focus on artificial things such as additives, processed foods. packaging , personal care products and even the water we drink. tobacco smoke But nobody ever consider that the air we breath which is often polluted with carcinogenic materials that results from photochemical smog and even natural radioactivity..
We don’t even remember that we often reside in houses made of stones and concrete which are producers of radioactive noble gas radon from the natural decay of infintisimal amounts of radioactive elements uranium and thorium present in those construction materials..Take note aside from tobacco smoke the the second cause of lung cancer is radon inhalation which is difficult to avoid…if you live and reside in such homes made from stone materials..

Perry April 8, 2013 - 5:30 pm

Rubbish, human race would be extinct by now, if going by your hypothesis, that decay of bricks and other building materials in our homes causes cancer. I think, bros should do a proper homework on these sensitive issues before going public.

dippydodaa May 24, 2013 - 4:43 pm

Cancer is supposed to be based on multiple factors – if the human body could withstand 3 or 4 carcinogens 100 years ago, it is reasonable to assume that perhaps it cannot withstand the onslaught of the toxins all at interplay. Also, with better treatment, cancer patients survive and have children, as rightly entitled to do so – however without the corresponding filtering at egg/sperm stage, we are not breeding cancer out.

graham jennings April 12, 2013 - 3:47 pm

Radon gas – what it is, the health risks, measurement and action levels

Radon gas is produced during the radioactive decay of radium which comes from uranium. It is also referred to as Radon-222 and is often described as the daughter of the radioactive decay of radium.

It occurs naturally through the presence of uranium in most rocks, soils, bricks and concrete.

Radon gas itself does not present too serious a radiological hazard when breathed in and immediately exhaled. The problem lies with the decay products – the radon daughters – which behave like solids and can attach themselves to dust and moisture in the atmosphere. These solids can take up residence in lungs and airways and emit alpha particles which are known to cause cell damage.

We all breathe in radon to some extent and it accounts for half of the radiation dosage each of us receives. It is not possible to see, hear, smell or taste radon gas.

Outdoors, radon disperses harmlessly into the air, but once it finds its way indoors, through gaps and cracks in floors and walls, it may build up to potentially harmful levels.

The amount of gas released varies greatly depending on where you live and is more likely to be found in areas where the geology features concentrations of granite and limestone.

How radon gets into buildings
Generally radon rises up through cracks in the earth and simply disperses into the atmosphere. Warm air inside a house draws the gas in through flooring and any gaps or cracks in the building structure. Underground radon can collect in caves and mines. High concentrations of radon can also accumulate in confined spaces such as basements.

Health risks
Health data from nine European countries confirms that domestic exposure to radon increases the risk of lung cancer. In the UK between 1000 and 2000 deaths each year are estimated to be caused by exposure to radon. Results based on a European wide epidemiological study showed that the risk from radon is approximately 25 times higher for cigarette smokers than for non-smokers

Tony June 14, 2013 - 7:53 pm

Not all areas of the country have radon gas coming up from the ground and that which is given off by wall plaster etc is very small and probably gets dispersed every time we open the windows or doors. You may be right though if the house is in an area where it is high and they have sealed pvcu windows and doors with double glazing units, all of which create a sealed box, the rate that it is breathed-in must be high.

What about all the crematoriums burning bodies and giving off dioxins into the atmosphere to be breathed in. Burials used to be the norm but not now.

Some research needs to be done.

Tony Valcarcel March 17, 2013 - 6:36 pm

Why are we allowed to sell this shit in America?

Anne March 11, 2013 - 7:09 am

So much nonsense, where does one begin?

Plant-based does not equal safe. Switching over your toothpastes, sunscreen, deodorant or whatever to plant-based alternatives guarantees zilch. Depending on how well-tested they are, they could be more dangerous.

“Chlorine is a big red flag. If it is strong enough to kill all bacteria and other dangerous compounds in our water, do you really think it’s a good idea to pass it through our systems?”
Good example of scare tactics that have little to do with logic. Just because something can kill bacteria it shouldn’t be in our body? Seriously? What about our own white blood cells? What about the very strong acid inside our stomach? Of course Chlorine is toxic. It’s a matter of how much you have in your water, that’s all. Your water supplier should monitor your water and check chlorine levels (as well as other stuff btw). There are defined safety levels which should not be crossed, and that’s about it. Any substantiated actual STUDIES that show any correlation between drinking water and cancer btw? or just a general scare, for kicks?

dippydodaa May 24, 2013 - 5:25 pm

Well we can only do the best we can. I have just switched to plant based toothpaste to avoid sodium saccharin after hearing that the body’s absorbtion of this toxin via this route is effective (a tiny amount of vitamin B in toothpaste can actually cure someone of a lack of the vitamin, even though you do not knowingly swallow it).

Also, safety levels have a lot to do with financial and practical limitations. They say chemicals of the major players are diluted to safe quantities/levels – what they do not guarantee is what happens when safe level of toxic chemical 1 combines with safe level of toxic chemical 2, 3, 4….what happens when these build up/interact is wide open. We are lucky if they are identified in the first place, on any given day they are changing.

Agreed, we must be many years off knowing if and what cancers these cause (look how long it took for cigarettes which seems painfully obvious now), and even then research and results will not appear quickly because even if they can find an incentive, there is probably no alternative. But if we know we are absorbing a toxic cocktail daily do you really have the time to wait for the research to come to the conclusion this is a bad thing.

In some cases, Beluga whale corpses are disposed of as toxic waste – they live in a much more diluted ocean than our tap water.

Some true, some not true… organophthalates are contained in PVC not PET, PET is what our food and beverage containers are made from. Though, some food wraps or films do contain PVC derivatives.

Consumer Reports has been following the phthalates issue closely, with laboratory testing-
