4 Ways to Love Your Skin This Summer

by Dr. Christopher Khorsandi

The summer often means the start of relaxing vacations, neighborhood barbecues, and carefree sun-filled days.

It also is the season when your skin could use a little extra love.

With harsh UV rays beating down, air conditioners on high, and lots of reasons to sweat, your skin is working overtime.

But don’t worry. As a chief plastic surgeon, I can provide a few tips so you can keep that healthy, flawless glow this summer.

Ways To Treat Your Skin Right This Summer

 1. Be sun smart

Before you hit the beach, make sure to lather up with at least SPF 30 or higher to avoid painful sunburn, premature aging, and unsightly flaking.

Pay special attention to your lips, as the sun is particularly drying in that area. Pick a lip balm with an SPF 15 or higher and reapply often.

Also, think about wearing a hat with a fuller brim to protect your face and neck from sun exposure.

2. Eat your fruits and veggies

It isn’t just a line your mom enjoys saying. Incorporating fruits and vegetables into your diet can help you maintain a healthy glow by keeping your skin firm, protecting your cells from free radicals that can form from sun exposure, and guarding against damage from the sun’s UV rays.

Eat fruits that are rich in antioxidants, like blueberries and strawberries, which may prevent or delay skin cell damage.

Also, think about adding more low-fat dairy products, like yogurt, to your diet. Dairy foods contain vitamin A, which is an important component of healthy skin.

3. Stop all that underarm sweat

One of the biggest questions dermatologists get in the summer is this: how in the world do you stop that nasty underarm sweat?

Underarm sweat is embarrassing and can have a huge impact on someone’s lifestyle and quality of life. Most people aren’t aware of solutions beyond antiperspirants, and end up carrying around extra shirts to hide their sweat.

The miraDry Procedure, cleared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, delivers energy noninvasively to the sweat gland area under the arm, and creates targeted heat to eliminate the glands, reducing the amount you sweat in the area.

4. Stay hydrated

Getting enough to drink is important for your whole body – including your skin. During the summer months, the heat and the extra time spent at the beach can lead to dehydration.

Be sure to drink at least 64 ounces of water every day. Staying hydrated cleanses toxins from your body and helps your body, especially your skin, maintain moisture balance.

Also, if you’re a heavy caffeine drinker, you’ll need to drink even more water to keep that balance.

Work these simple nutrition and beauty tips into your daily routine to make sure you give your skin a little extra love this summer. Keeping these steps in mind will help you and your skin stay healthy and happy all summer long.
